September 4, 2010: Labor Day Weekend Weather forecast for Market hours: Party sunny to clear, in the 70s, up to the 80s by noon. HURRICANE SEASON NOTICE: What's in season? As we say goodbye to summer, consider enjoying the extra day off eating things that are going to be saying goodbye for the season. Tomatoes, corn, and peaches are on the wane. Enjoy them while you can. Start the school year off with healthy habits. Apples are increasing, just in time for lunchboxes. Other staples: sliced whole grain breads, jams. butters, raw carrots and green beans, can also be found at the Market. Hillacres Pride (cheeses and meats) recommends trying Old Bay Cheddar this weekend. They will also have feta, mozzarella and curds. Pastured Chicken and pork is in good supply, and Labor Day BBQ sausages, ground beef and lamb sausage are here too. The Organic report from DanLynn Farm: Basil, Corn, Green Peppers, Green Beans, Eggplant, Slicing Tomatoes, Heirloom Ceylon Tomatoes, Onions (Red, Yellow and White), and Crimson Sweet Watermelons. Fall crops are all growing very well in this weather. Look for them to be available the end of September!"
Canning Demo Jenifer Bernstein of of "Yes, I Can™" is returning. Come to appreciate the art of home-preserving that was standard practice for our older generations. This weekend she will have advice AND supplies to offer for those who wish to start canning their own stash of produce for winter. Jenifer is a professional canning instructor, teaches workshops locally and offers home instruction as well. She can be reached at yesicanworkshops@gmail.com. The demo tent is weather-permitting. Contests Dan Lynn Organic Farm is in the process of growing some HUGE pumpkins for fun. They are hoping (nature still has to cooperate a bit longer) that one will be available for a free drawing in the fall, with the added bonus of having it delivered to your property by Farmer Dan himself. Stay tuned to this space for more updates. We have four winners so far of free one-year subscriptions to Edible Jersey magazine. Patricia C., Ruth C., Mary K., and Nicole C. We have six more to give away. Swing by the information tent (near the band tent) to drop an entry form. The information tent is weather-permitting.
