"...the obligatory stops to the farm stands on the way home from the beach in the mid-1960's...even as a kid, I appreciated the earthy yet spicy smell of bushels of tomatoes in the late afternoon sun...or, I was just plain glad to pry my hot, sticky self off of the vinyl seats for awhile..." -- Bob Grzib, Market enthusiast August 8, 2008:
What's
in season: Green bell peppers are turning color and you will see many more color varieties at the market. Once a green bell pepper turns red it has more Vitamin C than an orange. Some very delicious sweet pepper varieties are mistaken for hot peppers and can get overlooked...pay attention to the cards on the bins. Patrick from Great Harvest reports, "This week we are featuring our Pineapple Zucchini bread. Also our new S'mores Bread...a whole wheat bread with graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows, just like the old fireside treat but without the campfire." Organic
tomato special! We've got 26 crates (25 lbs each) of ripe organic tomatoes that are just perfect for canning or making your own organic spaghetti sauce or red gravy! $15 for a crate. Just email Danlynnfarms@aol.com (or call 856-299-6665) to reserve a box. We'll bring it to Collingswood on Saturday for you to pick up! (Contact us by 9pm Friday night. While supplies last.) Thanks, (Please note what veterans to buying canning tomatoes already know: Canning/sauce tomatoes are blemished in some way but all are ready or near ready for canning or making spaghetti sauce.) "Never
give up on your dreams" Personals: Congratulations
to a Market family member Arts
& Crafts and the Market: Linger longer to see it all--bring an empty cooler in the car. Schober Orchards' frozen cider makes a great ice pack. Recipes: Basic succotash. Raw corn salad. Click here to view and print. Perennial
