WM. SCHOBER SONS, INC.
2008 Century Farm Family

Wm. Schober Sons, Inc. is a fourth-generation family fruit farm. William Frederick Schober came to America from Germany in the year 1888. In 1891 he and his brother established a basket-making business in Philadelphia. William married his wife, Gertrude Noll, in Philadelphia and thus began the William Schober family. They had five sons and three daughters. In 1896 William sold his share of the business to his brother and ventured into farming in Monroeville, New Jersey. In 1924 William was chosen the Master Farmer of the State by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.

William and three of his sons operated fruit orchards, growing apples and peaches. At his passing in 1949, sons Harry, Frank and Edward continued the farming operation. In 1961 Edward’s son-in-law, Myron Hurff, joined the business. Myron and his wife, Darlene, became the owners in 1977 and incorporated the business in 1979. Their son, John, joined the operation in 1981 and took over the business in December 2007.

Today, over 100 years later, the farm continues to produce apples, peaches, and nectarines on 275 beautiful acres of preserved farmland. As John oversees operations at the farm, he has transitioned to direct marketing, including the Schober retail market in Monroeville and community farmers’ markets in Collingswood, West Cape May, and Lansdowne, PA.

John’s sons, Johnny and Jason, now represent the fifth generation of the family to work the Schober farm. John’s wife, Pam, maintains the Schober website and works at the farmers’ markets. She keeps busy at home with their daughter, Faith.

In April 2008 Wm. Schober Sons, Inc. was awarded the 2008 Century Farm Family Award by the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Agricultural Society.

In 2003 we were invited to participate in the Collingswood Farmers’ Market. It has been an absolute blessing to our business and our family. Please accept our appreciation and sincere thanks for letting us serve you. Our aim is to please and satisfy. To serve you is a real privilege and pleasure.
